Last thing- Never, ever use one of those clamshell docks while playing a game or editing video. You can click it back to "Automatic" when you exit the game. For nearly all GPU intensive applications - Gaming on low to medium settings, FinalCut Pro, Resolve video editing etc - 3500 to 4000 RPM on both fans will be more than adequate.

While it will be audible and create white noise, most MacBook Pro fans run up to 6,000 RPM. I play with over the ear headphones on anyhow and can't hear it. When I play WoW Classic on my rMBP I lock both fans to 3,500 rpm - it keeps the computer at the same temperature as when WoW is not running. Macs Fan Control will allow you to click its icon in the taskbar up top and manually specify the speed for both fans. Apple has always been too conservative with fan speed - the consequence is enormous heat buildup inside the computer. If you use an external keyboard and mouse, or want a more finished and attractive option, consider something like this. You want to get the bottom of the laptop off the table to allow airflow under it. Lay the pieces under each side, front to back. If nothing else, two pieces of wood 2 inches Wide, 1-2 inches tall and the depth of the laptop will work. Elevate your laptop an inch or two off the table.
